Cal Poly to Host Teach-In on Climate Change Solutions Jan. 31

SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly will join more than 1,000 universities across the country to host a day-long teach-in entitled “Focus the Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America” on Jan. 31. The goal of the free and open event is to spark national discussion about climate change solutions.

The teach-in features presentations and panel discussions by faculty and staff experts from various fields including physics, biology, architecture, engineering, agriculture, business, economics, psychology and religious studies.

Focus the Nation concludes with a workshop conducted by university political science professors and features a non-partisan examination of the 2008 Presidential candidates' plans for climate change solutions. Congresswoman Lois Capps and State Assemblyman Sam Blakeslee will give keynote speeches at the event.

Some Cal Poly faculty members intend to encourage student participation and plan to devote the day’s classes to consideration of global warming solutions as it relates to their courses. Participation in the teach-in has been endorsed with resolutions by Associated Students Inc., the Academic Senate and university administration.

Other events taking place during the day include a green job fair and trade show, an art display and installation, and a Web cast on Jan. 30 entitled “The 2% Solution.” The national Web cast features Stanford climate scientist Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins, and green jobs pioneer Van Jones.

Focus the Nation: Global Warming Solutions for America is coordinated by Empower Poly Coalition – a coalition of sustainability related clubs and organizations on campus.
