Former Cal Poly Professor Terri Swartz Named Dean for CSUEB’s College of Business

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Terri Swartz, interim dean of the College of Business and Economics at California State University, East Bay, has been named as its permanent dean.

CSUEB Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Michael K. Mahoney made the announcement Dec. 20. Swartz came to CSUEB from Cal Poly in July 200 to serve as the interim dean.

Swartz, a Cal Poly faculty member for 16 years, also served as the interim dean and interim associate dean of the Orfalea College of Business during her years in San Luis Obispo.

She served as interim dean from February 2002 to August 2004, and as interim associate dean from September 1999 to August 2000.  She spent 16 years on the Cal Poly faculty and before that 11 years on the Arizona State University faculty.

“President Mohammad Qayoumi and I are delighted with the progress and accomplishments in our College of Business and Economics under Terri’s leadership as the interim dean,” said Mahoney.  “She has done a great job in preparing the college for the future, and I’m delighted that she has agreed to accept this important challenge.”

Mahoney noted that Swartz guided the Orfalea College of Business in receiving its reaccreditation through the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business), the official accrediting body for business colleges. That process is currently underway at the CSUEB College of Business and Economics

“Terri’s administrative experience at Cal Poly is particularly relevant to Cal State East Bay, and her background in research, curriculum and instruction makes her an excellent match for the college’s faculty, staff and students,” Mahoney said.  “She has also had strong experience working with industry and the community that will help her lead the college.”

In October, Cal State East Bay’s College of Business and Economics was selected as one of the best business schools in the United States for a second straight year by the Princeton Review, which surveys academic programs annually.

Swartz said she is honored to be appointed to the permanent position at CSUEB.

“I feel privileged to be given this opportunity,” Swartz said.  “I’ve been having a great time since arriving here as interim dean.  There is so much potential here in the College of Business and Economics and with this great university.”

Swartz said she understands the priorities of the college.

“The maintenance of our accreditation is our No. 1 focus right now,” said Swartz, who helped guide the Orfalea College through the process during its fifth and sixth year reviews by the AACSB.

Swartz received her bachelor’s degree in secondary education and her MBA from Clarion University, and her doctorate in business administration—with a concentration in marketing—from The Ohio State University.
