Cal Poly Construction Management Students Take National Title

SAN LUIS OBISPO - A team of Cal Poly construction management students have earned first place in the Mechanical Contractors Association of America's annual competition held in Orlando, Florida.

The team, part of the Northern California Mechanical Contractors Student Chapter at Cal Poly, will also receive a $5,000 prize. Chosen from more than 20 schools nationwide, the Cal Poly team secured a spot in the final competition after submitting a written construction proposal to the MCAA jury.

Each proposal was evaluated based on the overall quality, project management and organization, feasibility of construction and program schedules, quality of the conceptual design, and accuracy/feasibility of conceptual costs.

During the final competition, four teams were challenged to retrofit the Dallas Power and Light Building in Dallas, Texas, into condominiums and retail stores.

The four teams that presented proposals during the Orlando convention were: Cal Poly, Georgia Tech, Oregon State University and University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

The Cal Poly team members include: Derrick Fellows, Randy Ayures, Frank Ormonde, Ross Fenton and team captain Mya Krikorian.

The competition is part of career development and education support initiative by the MCAA. The MCAA serves the needs of approximately 2,300 firms nationwide involved in heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, plumbing, piping, and mechanical service.
