Cal Poly Students Hope to Bat a Thousand With Emergency Services Day Oct. 22
Softball Tournament and Family Day to Benefit the Baby Austyn Foundation
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha and seven sororities are teaming up with local police officers and firefighters for a charity softball tournament Sunday, Oct. 22, at Santa Rosa Park. The public is invited to come watch the tournament and participate in activities at the fraternity’s first annual Emergency Services Appreciation Day. All proceeds will be donated to the Bence Family’s Austyn Bence Memorial Fund
In addition to the tournament, Pi Kappa Alpha is sponsoring a variety of activities including fast pitch booths with University Police radar guns and an all-you-can-eat hot dog roast for $5.
Pi Kappa Alpha has pledged all proceeds to Cal Poly alumnus, Kevin Bence, and his wife, Jennifer, to help pay for medical bills related to their son’s rare illness. Although Austyn succumbed to Malignant Infantile Osteopetrosis in March, many of the medical procedures were deemed experimental and not covered by health insurance.
The single elimination softball series includes 16 teams, each comprised of ten sorority members and five members from the San Luis Obispo Police Department, San Luis Obispo Fire Department and University Police Department.
