Cal Poly Multicultural Center Celebrates Latino History Month
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly’s Multicultural Center kicks off Latino History Month with a Skull Workshop on Thursday, Nov. 2 in the Multicultural Center, UU, Room 217. The workshop offers students, faculty and staff an opportunity to celebrate and learn about the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos.
The Multicultural Center will host a series of events throughout the month that reflect various issues facing Latin America. All events are free and open to the public. The month-long series of events include:
Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m. – Sam Cortez leads a discussion on Latin Reggae (UU, Room 208)
Nov. 14, time to be announced – Kimberly Romo, local KSBY newscaster, leads discussion on Latinas in a male-dominated field (location to be announced)
Nov. 15, 6:30 p.m. – The film, “When the Mountain Trembles,” with discussion by Glenda Moscoso on the Guatemalan military versus the people (UU, Room 208)
Nov, 18, 8 p.m. – Justin Akers Chacon discusses his book, “No One is Illegal,” and Mexican immigration issues (Business Building, Room 213)
Nov. 28, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. – Art exhibit features the work of Dominican artist, Robert Maja (UU, Room 212A)
Nov. 28, 7 p.m. – “Women of Juarez,” a senior project on the disappearance of women in the Mexican town, is presented by Cal Poly student, Aimee Williams (Chumash Auditorium)
Nov. 29, 6:30 p.m. – The film, “Balseros,” with a discussion about the lives of Cuban boat people (UU, Room 208)
Nov. 30, 11 a.m. to noon – Live music from Palos Latin Roots and dancing by the Cal Poly Salsa Club concludes the Multicultural Center’s Latino History Month celebration
