Cal Poly Students Host ‘MOSTfun Volleyball’ Tournament Nov. 19
SAN LUIS OBISPO – Cal Poly students are hosting a four-on-four volleyball tournament and barbecue at the Wadsworth Volleyball Courts in Pismo Beach on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 10 a.m., to raise money for volunteer medical teams that provide surgical care to underprivileged children in Mexico.
Pre-registration is available online at www.MOSTfunvolleyball.com or on campus at UU during the week of Nov. 13; sign-ups are available throughout the day. Cost is $10 per person or $40 per team for those who sign up prior to Nov. 6. Day-of-the-event registration begins at 9 a.m., and the cost is $12.50 a person and $50 for a team.
Proceeds will benefit the Mercy Outreach Surgical Team, a program of Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. The group is composed of doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals who volunteer medical care and life-enhancing surgeries to disadvantaged people in other nations.
Twice each year, volunteers fly to Mexico and spend one week operating on children who have been brought in from the impoverished countryside. Often, these patients have deformities such as cleft lips and palates, which cause them to be separated from society. Due to physical and speech impediments, some of these children are abandoned or kept home from school. The medical procedures provided by M.O.S.T. not only correct a patient’s physical deformity, they allow the children to integrate back into their communities and live normal lives, according to the Mercy Hospital Foundation.
