Construction Sciences Forum to Focus on ‘Things You Don’t Learn In School’ April 5-7

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- “Things You Don’t Learn in School,” Cal Poly's ninth annual Construction Sciences Forum, will offer future builders ideas for what to do after college.

The forum, scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, through Friday, April 7, is sponsored by the Construction Specifications Institute Club of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design. Most of the forum's events are open to the public and will be held in the Berg Gallery (Room 105) of the CAED Building.

The forum begins at 5 p.m. April 5, in Philips Hall in the Performing Arts Center with a keynote address, “It’s Your Call – Using your No. 1 Asset." Speaker Lee Orosco of Albuquerque, N.M., will discuss the care and marketing of oneself in an ever-changing business world. Orosco is a program manager for Intel and works on construction projects worldwide. She earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering technology-civil at New Mexico State University.

On April 6, 1-4:30 p.m., the forum will feature a product show and three one-hour presentations
on topics “you don’t learn in school.” A barbecue dinner at 6 p.m. will be followed by a roundtable discussion at 7:30 p.m. A Forum Passport will be given to students attending the keynote address and the product show. Those who complete the passport and turn it in will have their names entered into a raffle.

Tickets for the barbecue are $30 for professionals and faculty members and $5 for student members; they may be purchased at the door, or prior to the event, in the CAED Building stair court.

A student shade-structure design competition will be featured 9 a.m. to noon April 7 on Dexter Lawn, followed by lunch and awards.
