Cal Poly Provocative Perspectives Series
to Explore
‘Prejudice among the Well-Intentioned’ Jan. 12
Cal Poly’s Provocative Perspectives series continues Thursday,
Jan. 12, when John Dovidio, professor of psychology at the University
of Connecticut, will address “Prejudice among the Well-Intentioned:
Understanding Contemporary Racism.”
The free event will take place in the Vista Grande Café
on Cal Poly campus, beginning with breakfast at 7:30 a.m., followed
by the lecture at 8 a.m.
Dovidio will examine contemporary forms of bias that, in the absence
of overt racism, continue to adversely affect the well-being of
African Americans and other people of color. He will discuss conscious
and unconscious expressions of bias and how to recognize the subtleties
of contemporary racism.
Dovidio is the editor of the Journal of Personality and Social
Psychology--Interpersonal Relationships and Group Processes. He
has been president of the Society for the Psychological Study of
Social Issues of the American Psychology Association and chair of
the Executive Committee of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology.
According to Cornel Morton, Cal Poly vice president for Student
Affairs, Dovidio will share an interesting perspective on contemporary
forms of prejudice and racism. Results of his research help bring
understanding to the decisions individuals make when confronted
with matters of race, Morton said.
This event (including breakfast) is free and open to the public;
reservations are required. For more information or to make reservations,
call Liz Cofer at 756-0327 or e-mail lcofer@calpoly.edu.
