Cal Poly Theatre and Dance to Stage Pulitzer Prize-Winning
'Proof'
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly's Theatre and Dance Department will
stage David Auburns' 2001 Pulitzer Prize-winning play, "Proof,"
at 8 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, Nov. 10-12 and Nov. 17-19,
in the Spanos Theatre on campus.
The production, which opens the Theatre and Dance Department's
2005-2006 seasons, will be the regional stage premiere of the drama.
"Proof" has been hailed as one of the most important
plays of the decade, according to Pamela Malkin, director of the
production and associate chair of the Theatre and Dance Department.
"The play explores the lives of two brilliant, but deeply
disturbed, mathematicians. An intriguing mystery, as well as a compelling
family drama, the play examines the often thin line between madness
and genius," Malkin said.
Guest artist Bill McLaughlin will head the cast as Robert. With
over 30 years' experience as a professional actor and director,
McLaughlin has performed a variety of roles on television and in
feature films and national television commercials.
Senior theatre arts major Kristin Copeland of Newport Beach, portrays
Robert's daughter, Catherine. Copeland has been seen in several
Theatre and Dance Department productions including, "The Accidental
Death of an Anarchist," "Elemosynary," "Macbeth"
and "A Wrinkle in Time."
Janell Jones of San Diego is playing Claire, Catherine's older
sister, and R.J. Pomeroy of Roseville will play Hal Dobbs, a former
student of Robert's.
Jones and Pomeroy, both theatre arts majors, have appeared in the
Cal Poly productions of "Macbeth" and "The Accidental
Death of an Anarchist."
Malkin, a longtime Cal Poly professor and seasoned director, has
directed the Cal Poly productions of "Guys and Dolls,"
"The Glass Menagerie" and "Crimes of the Heart."
The guest scenic designer is Teresa Shea, a professional theatre
and film designer from Los Angeles. Les Solomon from the Symphony
Space in New York and Foothill Theatre Company of Nevada City is
the guest lighting designer. Costumes have been designed by Theatre
and Dance Department faculty member Kathy Dugan. Howard Gee, also
a member of the Theatre and Dance Department, is the technical director.
