Cal Poly Symphony Season Opens with Fall Concert Nov. 19

The Cal Poly Symphony's Fall Concert, titled "Inspired by Mountains," will kick off its 2005-2006 season Saturday, Nov. 19.

The concert, at 8 p.m. in Harman Hall in the Performing Arts Center 's Christopher Cohan Center , will be conducted by Music Department faculty member David Arrivée.

The program will feature two musical responses to the natural world: Alan Hovhaness' Symphony No. 2, " Mysterious Mountain ," and Beethoven's Symphony No. 6, "Pastorale."

"For Hovhaness, mountains were 'symbolic meeting places between the mundane and spiritual worlds' - places where we attempt to know the Divine," said Arrivée. "Beethoven tried to spend more waking hours outside than in, taking long walks every day and spending summers in the countryside. His sixth symphony is an expression of his love of the world around him."

Tickets for the concert are $6 for students, $8 and $10 for senior citizens and $10 and $12 for the public. They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787). Patrons who buy season tickets to four Music Department events, through the Performing Arts Ticket office, will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.

The concert is sponsored by the Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, go online to http://symphony.calpoly.edu , e-mail symphony@calpoly.edu , or call 756-2406.
