Cal Poly History Department To Offer New Master of Arts Degree

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Beginning winter quarter 2006, Cal Poly’s History Department will offer a new Master of Arts degree with concentrations in American, European, Asian, Latin American and African history.

Many of the courses will be taught later in the day and in the evening so that people working full-time can take advantage of the program, said Department Chair Carolyn Stefanco.

The program, recently approved by the California State University, is intended to fill a need for local residents to earn a master’s degree in history without having to travel outside the county.

To help staff the new program, the History Department will recruit three assistant professors in the fields of African, Southeast Asian, and early American history.

The deadline to apply to the program for winter quarter is Nov. 1; the deadline for spring quarter is Jan. 15. Students interested in applying can request a Graduate Study in History Handbook from the history Professor George Cotkin, graduate program coordinator, at gcotkin@calpoly.edu or (805) 756-2763.
