ASI Events Presents “Don’t Get
Excited” Art Exhibit
in UU Gallery through Oct. 20-Nov. 10
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) Events will display Cal Poly senior Randy Scudder’s collection of oil and acrylic paintings on canvas in the UU Gallery from Oct. 20 through Nov. 10. The exhibit is free and can be viewed 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
An opening reception will be held Thursday, Oct. 20 from 6 - 8 p.m. in the UU Gallery, located on the second floor of the University Union in the Epicenter. There will be refreshments and a musical performance by Randy Williams III. The artist will be present for questions and discussion.
Scudder, an art and design major, paints images drawn from the internet, television, family photo albums and photographs. The never-ending stream of visual information surrounding us all inspires Scudder to interpret and manipulate the images through the oil painting process.
“I draw upon a wide range of conflicting, disturbing and banal images that compete for our attention daily,” Scudder said. “Such things as beheadings in the Middle East, friends at a party and people disfigured by radiation all coexist and are homogenized by their transference to paint on canvas.”
Among Scudder’s collection of canvases are some controversial, violent or disturbing images. When looking for raw material for new paintings, Scudder likes to select key pictures from the media. Recreating these images with his paintbrush is Scudder’s way of commenting on what’s happening in the world.
ASI Events and the UU Gallery regularly seek out student art for display. All mediums are welcome.
