East' Title of Nov. 7 Talk
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Nonie Darwish, a free-lance writer and internationally
known public speaker, will present "The Importance of Building
Respect, Trust and Peace in Middle East" at 7 p.m. Monday,
Nov. 7, in Cal Poly's Chumash Auditorium.
Darwish, a Muslim raised in Cairo, Egypt, and the Gaza strip, writes
extensively against the culture of terror and jihad. She speaks
around the world to promote interfaith dialogue and peace.
Her father headed the Egyptian military in Gaza and the Sinai Peninsula
when Gaza was under Egyptian control in the 1950s. He was appointed
by Egypt's President Gamal Abdel Nasser to head operations against
Israel. In 1956, when Darwish was eight years old, her father was
killed in the war against Israel and became a national hero.
Darwish earned a bachelor's degree in sociology/ anthropology from
the American University in Cairo. She immigrated to America in 1978
and is now a U.S. citizen.
"After 9/11, I realized that my culture of origin is in a
head-on collision with the rest of the world, and I started speaking
out against terrorism," Darwish said.
Her articles have appeared in frontpagemag.com, the Jerusalem Post,
worldnetdaily.com and Pakistan Today. Several articles have been
translated into French, Italian, Spanish and Russian.
Darwish has spoken at such major universities and colleges as Cornell,
Carnegie Melon and Stanford.
