Find "42nd Street" At the Cohan Center Nov. 14, 15
SAN LUIS OBISPO, CALIFORNIA – The Tony Award-winning “42nd Street” has been hailed as the Broadway musical for people who love Broadway musicals.
At 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday, November 14 and 15 at the Cohan Center, Cal Poly Arts invites audiences to “Come and meet those dancin' feet…” as the national touring company for “42nd Street” fills the hall for a tappin’ good time.
“42nd Street” is described by critics as “Virtually nonstop pleasures” (Newsday), “Pure exhilaration” (The New York Post), “Lavish showmanship that shines from every last sequin” (Variety), and “Pure Razzmatazz!” (The Philadelphia Inquirer).
A Broadway legend, “42nd Street” defined musical comedy with its “a-star-is-born” story, spectacular design, score of hit standards, large show chorus, and some of the most admired ensemble tap dancing ever to take to the theatre stage.
The original 1980 Broadway production of “42nd Street” won the Tony for Best New Musical, ran for more than eight years, and is one of the ten longest-running shows in Broadway history.
The Broadway revival opened in 2001, won the Tony for Best Musical Revival, and remained the jewel in the crown of the renewed and invigorated actual 42nd Street in New York City for the next four years.
“42nd Street” features such Broadway standards as “We’re in the Money,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” and, of course, the spectacular title number, “42nd Street,” dazzlingly danced down a flight of steps.
Taken from source material of 1930s movies, including “42nd Street” (1933), “Gold Diggers of 1933,” “Dames,” (1934) and “Gold Diggers of 1935,” Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble wrote the book for the show based on the novel by Bradford Ropes. Harry Warren wrote the music and Al Dubin wrote the lyrics. Gower Champion was the original director and choreographer.
Tickets for the performance range from $56 - $68, with student discounts available, and may be purchased at the Performing Arts Ticket Office, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays.
