Cal Poly Choral Ensembles to Perform ‘A Christmas Celebration’

SAN LUIS OBISPO – It’s beginning to sound a lot like Christmas, or will soon, thanks to Cal Poly's upcoming annual holiday concert set for 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, in Harman Hall in the Christopher Cohan Center.

The Cal Poly choirs and a capella groups, including barbershop quartets and Take It SLO, will perform. The choirs include PolyPhonics, The University Singers, and the Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble.

Cal Poly's Brass Ensemble, conducted by Keith Snell, will also join the choirs for this festive concert.

The choirs are conducted by Thomas Davies and will be accompanied by Patrick Christians, Paul Woodring, and Susan Azaret Davies, all members of the Cal Poly Music Department. Melody Svennungsen, a music senior, will serve as assistant conductor for the concert.

This year’s program includes music by Jan Sweelinck, Benjamin Britten, Francis Poulenc, Sergei Rachmaninoff and Vaclav Nelheybel. A newly composed work by music faculty member Meredith Brammeier will be given its premiere.

In what has become an annual tradition, the audience will be invited to join in a carol sing-a-long.

Tickets to “A Christmas Celebration” are $17 and $20 for the public, $16 and $19 for senior citizens, and $10 for students.

They are on sale at the Performing Arts Ticket Office from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. To order by phone, call SLO-ARTS (756-2787). Patrons who buy season tickets from the Performing Arts Ticket office to four Music Department events will receive a 10 percent discount; a 15 percent discount is given on tickets to five or more events.

The holiday concert is sponsored by Cal Poly’s Music Department, College of Liberal Arts and Instructionally Related Activities program. For more information, call the Music Department at 756-2406.
