Cal Poly Makes History; First Doctoral Students Arrive on Campus
SAN LUIS OBISPO – The College of Education welcomed seven students in the university’s first joint doctoral program, making history as the first doctoral candidates enrolled in classes on the Cal Poly campus.
After an initial year at our partner school, UC Santa Barbara, the students began their second year in the new degree program in educational leadership at Cal Poly fall quarter 2004.
“We are creating a new graduate culture where students blend
Cal Poly’s mission of “learn by doing” with the
strong research traditions of UCSB,” said Jim Gentilucci,
co-director of the program and a faculty member in Cal Poly’s
College of Education. “We believe this
research-practice nexus will create new answers to educational problems
that have plagued schools for decades.”
Students enrolled in the first cohort are Patty Grady, assistant
principal, Santa Maria-Bonita School District; Lynn Lamb, teacher,
Lucia Mar Unified School District; Holly Edds, principal, Joe Nightingale
School, Orcutt; Janice Wellman, reading/resource specialist, Lucia
Mar
Unified School District; Kevin Bontenbal, instructional technology
librarian, Cuesta College; Anne Marie Rose, lecturer, Cal State
Bakersfield; and James Brescia, principal, Saint Rose Catholic School,
Paso Robles.
Cal Poly and UCSB have admitted a second doctoral cohort of 10 students
who began their coursework at the UCSB campus this fall. Recruitment
is under way for the third cohort for fall 2005.
