Society of Women Engineers Hosts Day To 'Build' Middle-Schoolers Into Engineers

SAN LUIS OBISPO-Local middle school students will have the opportunity to discover and explore careers in engineering on Saturday, Nov. 13, during "Building An Engineer Day," hosted by Cal Poly's Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

Workshops designed to promote an interest in engineering for girls and underrepresented minorities will take place from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at various labs on campus. The event is free, and all sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students are invited to participate.

Engineering faculty will introduce students to a variety of engineering disciplines through a series of fun and informative mini labs. The hands-on labs will include computer science, electrical engineering, materials engineering and mechanical engineering activities.

The purpose of the "Building an Engineer" workshop is to interest students in engineering as a career choice and to present female engineering role models. The day-long event includes lunch, a T-shirt and gift bag. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to increase enrollment of underrepresented students in college engineering programs.

Students may register at www.swe.calpoly.edu under the K-12 Programs tab. Students should sign up now because space is limited. Parents are encouraged to attend for a $10 donation to cover lunch and supplies. If you have any questions or comments, e-mail Erin Glines at eglines@calpoly.edu.
