Irish Music Ambassadors Return to the Cohan Center Jan. 18
SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Celebrating 31 years of touring in North America,
Irish music legends, The Chieftains, will return to the Christopher
Cohan Center at 8 p.m. on
Tuesday, Jan. 18.
Cal Poly Arts presents the multi-Grammy-winning Celtic group, whose career spans 42 years and 41 albums. As Ireland's premier musical ambassadors, The Chieftains are the most enduring and influential creative force in establishing the worldwide appeal of Celtic music.
Six-time Grammy winners and 18-time Grammy nominees, The Chieftains maintain an international touring schedule that has brought them before millions of fans on every continent.
The Cohan Center concert will include songs from their upcoming February release, "Live In Dublin: A Tribute to Derek Bell." The album honors Bell, a member of The Chieftains for over 30 years. Bell died after recording the group's 2002 Grammy nominated album, "Down The Old Plank Road."
Special Spanish guest artists Carlos Nunez (gaita, recorder, whistle,
bombard), Francisco Alvarez (mandolin) and Jorge Nunez (percussion)
are also performing with The Chieftains, offering a dynamic exploration
of the music of Galicia, the Celtic section of Spain.
The Chieftains' original members include Paddy Moloney (Uilleann
pipes,
tin whistle), Matt Molloy (flute), Sean Keane (fiddle) and Kevin
Conneff (bodhran, vocals). Other performers include the notable
Irish harpist Triona Marshall, the young Canadian acrobatic dancing
team of brothers' Jon and Nathan Pilatzke, and Cara Butler and Donny
Golden, who will command the stage with their traditional Irish
dancing.
Tickets for the performance range from $52 - $64, with student
discounts available, and may be purchased at the Performing Arts
