Cal Poly Wind Orchestra Invited to Perform at Carnegie Hall

The Cal Poly Wind Orchestra, following a performance
at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, has been invited to perform in
New York's Carnegie Hall in 2003.

Under the direction of conductor and Music Professor William Johnson,
the 60-member orchestra will share the stage with the University of
Tennessee Wind Ensemble. The orchestras were invited to perform by
World Projects Corp., an organization that produces the International
Music Festival in Sydney. The annual event attracts wind bands from
throughout the world.

"As a result of Sept. 11, World Projects had decided to begin a new
festival in New York City," Johnson said, "bringing in wind bands from
throughout the United States to perform in Carnegie Hall."

Cal Poly's invitation came as a result of its performance at the Sydney
Opera House in June 2000 as part of the International Music Festival.

William Lutt, president of World Projects, invited the Cal Poly Wind
Orchestra in a letter that said, in part,  "Over the years, the Wind
Orchestra at your university has shown the artistic performance level
necessary to be successful in a Carnegie Hall concert at the New York
Wind Band Festival."

"It's hard to believe that anything could top the experience we had
performing in the Sydney Opera House," Johnson said. "An evening
concert in Carnegie Hall will certainly be on the same level and
perhaps beyond. I am confident our talented young musicians will be
up to the task.

"We will need lots of community support," Johnson said. For more information, call
