Cal Poly Offers Smart Viticulture Seminars in Paso Robles, Geyserville
Richard
Smart, a visiting professor at Cal Poly's College of Agriculture
and one of the world's leading viticulture experts, will offer three
industry seminars in California outlining the latest practical and scientific
knowledge available for wine grape growers.
Smart, of Australia, is an internationally recognized viticulture
expert. He writes regularly for California and Australian trade
journals and is the viticulture editor of both editions of the
celebrated "Oxford Companion to Wine." Smart's handbook "Sunlight
into
Wine" is regarded as the essential reference book for quality
wine-grape production. He was appointed as an annual visiting professor
in early 2001. He will teach at Cal Poly in the spring quarter each
year.
Smart's industry seminars will be held in Paso Robles and Geyserville,
and are sponsored by Cal Poly's Extended Studies program. Scheduled
seminars include:
· "Canopy Management and Partial Rootzone Drying (PRD)," April 19,
Paso Robles. Smart will be assisted by fellow Australian Peter Dry for
an all-day seminar at the Paso Robles Country Club. The seminar fee is
$195, which includes lunch, materials and tours of Central Coast
vineyards using PRD and progressive canopy management techniques.
· "Canopy Management and Partial Rootzone Drying (PRD)," April 22,
Geyserville. Smart and Dry will repeat the seminar at the Geyserville
Oriental Community Hall, in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley wine
country. The seminar fee is $195, which includes lunch, materials and
tours of Geyserville area vineyards using PRD and progressive canopy
management techniques.
· "Intensive Viticulture Techniques." May 3-5, J. Lohr Wine
Education Center, Paso Robles. Assisted by Cal Poly Viticulture
Professor Keith Patterson, the three-day seminar will focus on all
aspects of viticulture, from site selection to vineyard management
techniques to harvest. Topics will include how grapevines work,
rootstock, vineyard design, planting, trellis
systems, vineyard nutrition, management, machinery, costs and returns.
The seminar fee is $700, which includes lunch, materials and vineyard
tours. The seminar begins May 2 with a get acquainted mixer.
"Each of these seminars is designed for busy professionals," said
Smart. "They will be intensive, yet fun since everyone will be
attending for the same things - new knowledge and improved operational
results. Peter, Keith and I will each be teaching to our strengths."
