Law enforcement and community leaders from Cal Poly and the Central Coast will announce the formation of the San Luis Obispo Law Enforcement Assistance Foundation (SLO LEAF).

SLO LEAF is a nonprofit corporation formed to provide immediate and temporary financial assistance to local law enforcement personnel, active or retired, and their families, in response to need due to death, serious injury, critical illness or other catastrophic circumstances.

University Police will also discuss the first recipient of assistance provided by SLO LEAF: University Police Officer Jennifer Estelle. In November, Jennifer was diagnosed with breast cancer. She is currently on leave and undergoing treatment. However, her uninsured costs are expected to be $10,000. SLO LEAF and the University Police Department are working together to raise the $10,000 Officer Estelle needs to cover her medical expenses.

Present at the press conference will be the SLO LEAF board of directors: County Supervisors Katcho Achadjian and Harry Ovitt, Sheriff Pat Hedges, County Narcotics Task Force Commander Craig Wright, University Police Officer Joe Baranek, Arroyo Grande Police Sgt. John Allen, Sheriff's Deputy Tony Perry, Senior District Attorney's Office Investigator Tom Tolbert, San Luis Obispo Police Officer Dave Darbyshire, Highway Patrol Officer Connie Hunt and community representative Jim Brabeck.
