FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Cal Poly To Hold ReMEmber Week April 29-May 2

Cal Poly's ReMEmber Week, a program designed to
increase personal safety and awareness, is set for April 29-May 2.

This year's event will include a self-awareness information event,
self-defense presentations, a Take Back the Night speaker, a Community
Awareness Information Fair and a silent candlelight walk.

Cal Poly's ReMEmber program started in spring 1999 to support survivors
of sexual assault. The event also serves as a remembrance of college
students Rachel Newhouse and Aundria Crawford, who were lost to
violence, and Kristin Smart, who has been missing since 1996.

Information booths will be set up noon-3 p.m. April 29 in Room 220 in
the University Union to provide information on women's health issues,
including breast and pelvic exams, birth control and eating disorders.
Representatives from Cal Poly's Peer Health group, the San Luis Obispo
office of Planned Parenthood and the county's Economic Opportunity
Commission center will be in attendance.

A self-defense presentation by Scared Safe and SLO Kickboxing will take
place 6-8 p.m. April 30 in Bishop's Lounge in the University Union.

Award-winning poet Robin Morgan will deliver the keynote speech at 7:30
p.m. May 1 in Chumash Auditorium. Morgan is a novelist, feminist
activist, journalist and editor. Her talk will focus on her
prize-winning book, "The Demon Lover: The Roots of Terrorism," which
examines the links between terrorism and misogyny. A reception and book
signing will follow Morgan's talk.

A Community Awareness Information Fair is planned 11 a.m.-1 p.m. May 2
in the University Union with representatives from the Cal Poly Women's
Center and Women's Studies Program, and the San Luis Obispo Sexual
Assault and Prevention Center, the local chapter of the National
Organization of Women, the San Luis Obispo's Women's Resource Center,
Planned Parenthood and other community resources.

ReMEmber week will conclude May 2 with a silent, candlelight walk
during Farmers' Market in downtown San Luis Obispo, followed by an
open-microphone session at Mission Plaza. The walk will begin at 5:30
p.m. at Mission Plaza.

The events are free and open to the public. To help support the
ReMember program, the Cal Poly Women's Programs office and El Corral
Bookstore will sell ReMEmber T-shirts for $10 and $15.
