Cal Poly Recreation Administration Program Names First 'Outstanding Alum'

Cal Poly's Recreation Administration Program has named 1983 graduate and Los Osos resident Kendi Root to receive its first Outstanding Alumni Award. Root, a certified meeting professional and director of sales and marketing for the Inn at Morro Bay, is also a part-time lecturer for the program.

"The consummate professional, Kendi goes far beyond her role as a lecturer for the Recreation Administration Program," said program coordinator and Natural Resources Management Associate Professor Bill Hendricks. "She helps coordinate events and place students in internship and full-time employment positions and also assists with senior projects. In general, she answers our every call for help.

"Kendi also received our alumni award because of her contributions to the profession," Hendricks said. "She has an incredible dedication to 'rec' students and the industry."

Root's professional service has included numerous board member and committee positions with Meeting Professionals International and several publications as well as presentations throughout the United States at major conferences and conventions. She previously held sales and marketing positions with major resorts throughout the Napa Valley and has been a lecturer in continuing education at CSU Sacramento for 10 years.

Cal Poly's bachelor's degree program in recreation administration, offered by the university's Natural Resources Management Department, is one of approximately 100 programs nationwide accredited by the National Recreation and Park Association and the American Association for Leisure and Recreation.

During its 2001 accreditation review, the program received re-accreditation with a commendation for its outstanding "learn by doing" education.
