FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

National Speakers, New Technology, Job Opportunities Part of Recent
Printing Week Conference at Cal Poly

Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department recently celebrated Benjamin Franklin's birthday by holding International Printing Week, an annual series of lectures and other printing
industry-related events.

This year award-winning technology, management issues, multimedia
programs, digital printing and related topics were discussed, and
several companies were recognized as "Partners in Education" for
providing support to Cal Poly.

The Pacific Printing and Imaging Association endowment at Cal Poly
sponsored a luncheon for all graphic communication students.

Ron Ford, manager of North American sales, Atlas Software, conducted a
seminar on "The Future of Mail and Electronic Publishing" and was
recognized for that company's ongoing support of Cal Poly through its
contributions of variable-data PrintShop Mail software for the Graphic
Communication Department's Electronic Publishing Laboratory.

A new Testing Machines Inc., Substrates Ink and Toner Laboratory was
dedicated, the result of a donation of research and testing equipment
from TMI.  IGT Testing Systems also supported the laboratory with a
contribution of printability testers for lithography and gravure.

Heidelberg USA was honored during the dedication of a Quickmaster DI
four-color digital printing press donated to Cal Poly. Gary Meinke,
vice president west of Heidelberg, was presented with a Partners in
Education plaque and a dedication poster produced on the press.

Patrick Marchese, president and chief executive officer of Markzware,
conducted a seminar on  preflighting and was honored as a Partner in
Education with Cal Poly for ongoing support and contributions of
Markzware's award-winning FlightCheck software to the Graphic
Communication Department's laboratories.

Another Partner in Education, Steve Whaley, president of Digimarc,
conducted a seminar on "Linking Printing and the World Wide Web."
Digimarc is in the process of installing a complete laboratory of
Digimarc MediaBridge digital watermarking software and related
technology, including cameras and scanners.

At the International Printing Week Banquet the Wallace Corp. presented
Cal Poly's new Graphic Communication Institute (GrCI) with a $10,000
check to support the institute's development efforts. The GrCI is Cal
Poly's graphic communication research, testing, product evaluation, and
industry education facility.

Keynote speaker and Cal Poly alumnus Mark Barbour, curator of the
International Printing Museum in Buena Park, portrayed Johann Gutenberg
in full costume and described, in humorous detail, Gutenberg's
important contribution to civilization, said Harvey Levenson, head of
the Graphic Communication.

"Cal Poly's annual event is one of the most comprehensive celebrations
of International Printing Week in the nation," Levenson said. "With a
focus on scholarship, technology and industry relations, the event
makes our students aware of the breadth of the profession and the
individuals and companies that are shaping its future."

Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department was founded in 1946 and has
more than 2,500 graduates, many holding leadership positions in the
printing, publishing and imaging industries, and in the equipment,
supply and software development sectors.

The department has more than 33,000 square feet of modern laboratories
to support a dynamic curriculum and world-class faculty, Levenson said.
With an enrollment of 300 students, the department offers
concentrations in design reproduction technology, electronic publishing
and imaging, and printing and imaging management.

The department conducts research, testing, product evaluations,
seminars, workshops and conferences for industry through the GrCI.
