Cal Poly Open House To Bring Back Poly Royal Parade
For
the first time in more than a decade, Cal Poly's Open House
festivities (April 19-21) will include a campus
parade, designed to show off the university's and the community's
unique character.
"The return of the parade -- the first since 1990 -- is a landmark
effort to bring back the good memories of Poly Royal," said Kerensa
Pearce, parade coordinator and Cal Poly political science major. "It
will make for an exciting kick-off to Saturday's events."
The parade will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the University Union at Cal
Poly and will proceed down Perimeter Road nearly to Dexter lawn, where
opening ceremonies will take place.
"Many on- and off-campus entities expressed enthusiasm and plan to
support Open House by showing off their organizations in the parade,"
Pearce said. "The response has been overwhelming. It is amazing how
many people want to be a part of bringing this Poly Royal tradition
back to Open House."
The Poly Royal Parade promises a variety of entertainment, from a
10-foot-tall blow-up soldier to a group of jugglers.
KSLY Sly 96.1 FM and KURQ 107.3 FM radio's "The Rock" will serve as
master of ceremonies. The Cal Poly Mustang Marching Band will play,
members of the Rose Float Club will ride in some of the prize-winning
floats, the Cal Poly Color Guard will march with flags and rifles, and
various engineering clubs will race cars, scooters and trucks.
Community involvement is also welcome in the parade.
"This is our way of helping to bridge the community and campus,"
Pearce
said. "Local organizations that have already signed up include the SLO
Bicycle Club and SLO Transit, which
plans to drive its downtown trolley in the parade."
