President of Morehouse College To Be Honored at Cal Poly's Baker Forum April
5
Walter E. Massey, president of Atlanta's Morehouse College,
will receive the Wiley Lifetime Achievement Award and an
honorary doctorate from Cal Poly at the inaugural Baker Forum on April 5.
Massey is former director of the National Science Foundation, the
government's lead agency for support of research and education in
mathematics, science and engineering. He has also headed the Argonne
National Laboratory, one of the U.S. government's oldest and largest
science and engineering research labs, and is a former president and
chairman of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He
currently serves as a member of the President's Council of Advisers on
Science and Technology.
"Walter Massey has dedicated his professional life to strengthening the
study of science and technology," Cal Poly Provost Paul Zingg said.
"There could not be a more deserving recipient of these awards."
The Baker Forum, titled "The Future of Polytechnic & Science and
Technology Universities," was established by the Cal Poly President's
Cabinet on the occasion of the 20th year of service to Cal Poly by
President Warren J. Baker and his wife, Carly, to further the dialogue
on critical public policy issues facing the nation and higher
education. It gives particular attention to the special social and
economic roles and responsibilities of polytechnic and science and
technology universities.
The inaugural Baker Forum on April 5-6 will bring together leaders from
higher education, high-tech industries, and national and state
governments to discuss three issues: preparing better-educated and
diverse students for careers in science, math, engineering and
technology; increasing partnerships among universities, industry and
government in research and education; and addressing ethical challenges
involved with science and technology's role in society.
John Wiley and Sons Inc. funds the Wiley Lifetime Achievement Award,
given in recognition of extraordinary leadership and lasting
contributions to American higher education and public life.
Cal Poly has previously awarded five honorary doctorates: to two
alumni, Burt Rutan, designer of the Voyager aircraft, and R. James
Considine, former chairman of the California State University Board of
Trustees; to Ann Veneman, secretary of the U.S. Department of
Agriculture; to Rita Colwell, director of the National Science
Foundation; and to David Baltimore, president of the California
Institute of Technology.
