Cal Poly Renewable Energy Institute Awards Grant
For Solar Energy Project

Cal Poly's Renewable Energy Institute (REI) has awarded a $25,000 solar energy grant to a team of faculty members from Ball State University in Muncie, Ind.

The team members, all from that campus's Center for Energy Research/Education/ Service, will be studying temperature and human comfort in passive solar buildings.

The grant is the fourth award from the Society of Building Science Educators/Evelyn and Harold Hay Fund (SBSE/EHHF).

The project includes a side-by-side comparison of test buildings to
allow the researchers to determine how interior temperature varies in
passive solar buildings, said Cal Poly Architecture Professor Margot
McDonald, co-director of the university's Renewable Energy Institute.

The SBSE/EHHF program is supported by a donation from Los Angeles area
chemist and inventor Harold Hay to the REI. Hay made the gift to
advance applied research in the areas of passive solar energy and water
conservation. Grants are made to individuals or teams of researchers
who are members of the Society of Building Science Educators.

The nonprofit Renewable Energy Institute was established at Cal Poly to
promote teaching, research, development and community service in solar
and renewable energy technologies.
