Construction Sciences Forum to Showcase Developments
In Technology, Sustainability, Effects of Sept. 11


Industry professionals will join Cal Poly professors
and students in examining "Building in a Changed World" at the fourth
annual Construction Sciences Forum on campus May 2-4.

Speakers, a product show, design and technology seminars, a roundtable
discussion and other events will address changes in the construction
industry, including developments in technology and sustainability and
the effects of Sept. 11.

The forum will begin at 7 p.m. May 2 with a talk by Arthur Dyson, dean
of the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture at Wright's Taliesin
East in Wisconsin and Taliesin West in Arizona. Dyson will speak about
"Poetics in Architecture" in the Gallery of the Architecture and
Environmental Design Building.

Other speakers for the three-day event include Cal Poly architectural
engineering grad Eric Stovner, project manager for the firm in charge of
all structural engineering aspects of searching, clearing and inspecting
the site of the World Trade Center towers in New York, and widely
acclaimed cutting-edge architect Randall Stout.  Forum topics include
construction codes and safety measures, the connections between energy
and architecture, and new technologies and techniques in digital and
computer-aided design.

Cal Poly faculty members will speak about straw-bale construction and
sustainable building techniques.

On May 4, student design teams from colleges and universities around the
state will compete in a design competition.

The Construction Sciences Forum is open to the public for fees ranging
from $90 to $200. Separate tickets for the May 3 dinner and professional
roundtable are available for $15.

Except for the barbecue and dinner, the forum is free to all Cal Poly
students and members of the faculty and staff.

The event is presented by the West Region of the Construction
Specifications Institute in conjunction with Cal Poly's Construction
Specifications Institute Student Affiliate and the College of
Architecture and Environmental Design.
