Cal Poly College of Architecture and Environmental Design
Plans New Events, Traditional Exhibits For Open House April 19-21


Cal Poly's College of Architecture and Environmental
Design has traditional exhibits and new events planned to highlight
this year's campuswide Open House 2002 April 19-21.

From reminiscing with former classmates to seeing a world turned
"upside down," visitors will find a range of interesting events hosted
by the college April 19-20. They include:

· The college's class of  '62 reunion gatherings April 19-20.
Alumni will showcase their current work 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday in the
CAED Gallery, Room 105 in the Architecture and Environmental Design
Building.

· An exhibit of student work featuring some of the colleges' most
imaginative projects, on display noon -5 p.m. April 19 and 10 a.m.-5
p.m. April 20. Work by students in all five of the college's
departments will be included in the exhibit in the CAED Gallery. In
addition, the Robert Hifumi Odo Memorial Scholarship Display of work by
architecture students will be open in the lobby, Room 212 of the
Architecture and Environmental Design Building.

· The Hearst Lecture Series 7 p.m. April 19 with Craig Hodgetts and
Hsin-Ming Fung, principals and co-founders of Hodgetts + Fung Design
Associates in Los Angeles. They will share their adaptation of
architectural form to the challenges of cultural change, urban
evolution and developing technology. The free lecture will be in
Chumash Auditorium in the University Union. It is made possible by a
grant from the Hearst Foundation.

· The 2002 Design Village competition, with its "Upside Down"
theme. Student teams from campuses across the West will build
self-designed shelters that must house their entire team for the
duration of Open House weekend. Design Village can be viewed 10 a.m.-4
p.m. April 20. Free shuttles will leave from the parking lot at the
corner of Poly Canyon Road and Perimeter Drive. Visitors may also walk
up the canyon.

· A first-time sneak peek at advance copies of  "The Vision," a
100-page volume that includes anecdotal remembrances and pictures
celebrating founding Dean George Hasslein's vision and the establishing
of the college. Published and edited by architecture graduate and 2001
honored alumnus Emanuele Barelli and his wife, Carolyn, a Cal Poly
English graduate, the book was made possible by the College of
Architecture and Environmental Design Foundation Board. This
pre-release event will be in partnership with the Cal Poly Alumni
Association at its booth 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. April 20 on Dexter Lawn.

· The first Cal Poly National Association of Homebuilders Student
Chapter "Building for the Future" exhibit 9 a.m.-4 p.m. April 20 in the
H-10 parking lot on University Drive next to the Dexter Building. The
students have built this scaled-down home using engineered and
environmentally friendly wood products and other innovative residential
systems.

· Tours of the college, led by Alpha Rho Chi, the national
fraternity for students and professionals in architecture, will be 1-4
p.m. April 19 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 20, starting at the college's
lower staircourt.

· The Architecture Department's Sustainable Environments Exhibit
will be on display all day April 20 in Room 220 in the Dexter Building.

· The City and Regional Planning Department's Noise Workshop and
Demonstration, on view 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 20 in Room 134 in the
Dexter Building.
