UC Riverside Professor To Discuss 'What Is Math?'
UC Riverside Philosophy Professor Erich Reck will
explore various "conceptions of number" -- from ancient Greek
philosophy to modern set theory -- in a talk at 4:10 p.m. May 10 in
Room 286 in Cal Poly's Fisher Science Building.
Reck's presentation will address the question of what mathematics is --
especially what it is about -- by focusing on arithmetic.
Reck will introduce and compare several different conceptions of number
and raise the question of whether any one of them deserves to be called
the "correct" concept.
The lecture is part of the university's Philosophy at Poly lecture
