"A Centennial Homecoming" Offers Events for Entire Community

SAN LUIS OBISPO -- Cal Poly's Homecoming 2001 celebration, "A Centennial
Homecoming," offers a full list of events for the community as well as
students and alumni.

Homecoming kicks off Monday, Nov. 5, with the decoration of the
University Union.  More than 20 student clubs and organizations will
hang banners in the UU Plaza, competing to earn points for creativity
and how well the banners illustrate this year's Homecoming theme.  The
banners will hang in the plaza throughout Homecoming.

Other events during Homecoming week include "Homecoming Comedy Kickoff"
at 7 p.m. Nov. 6 in Chumash Auditorium, a rally introducing the
Homecoming court at 11 a.m. Nov. 8 in the UU Plaza, and the Laugh
Olympics at 11 a.m. Nov. 9 in Mott Gym.

Cal Poly students will once again bring their "Mock Rock" competition to
Farmers' Market in downtown San Luis Obispo at 6 p.m. Nov. 8 at Higuera
and Nipomo streets.  The competing Homecoming clubs and organizations
will dance and lip-synch to music in this popular annual event.

Cal Poly's annual Homecoming Parade will march down Higuera Street in
downtown San Luis Obispo again this year, beginning at
10 a.m. Nov. 10 at Higuera and Morro streets. The parade will feature
more than 30 floats, music, and Grand Marshal Clarence Chiesa, Class of
1923, a San Luis Obispo resident and the university's oldest living
graduate at 96.

On Saturday, Nov. 10, Cal Poly will open its annual Homecoming Barbecue
to students and the community for the first time. The pre-game barbecue
will be on the Orfalea College of Business Lawn off California
Boulevard.

Tickets are $10 per person and include a tri-tip barbecue with all the
traditional Central Coast fixings, and are available at the event.

The Homecoming game begins at 3 p.m. in Mustang Stadium, where the Cal
Poly Mustangs will face Cal State Northridge.  The halftime show will
feature a performance by the Cal Poly Mustang Band and cheerleaders,
recognition of this year's Honored Alumni, and presentation of the
Homecoming court and announcement of this year's Cal Poly Homecoming
king and queen.

The university is inviting Cal Poly families, friends, supporters and
the community to come to campus for "A Centennial Homecoming."
